China reverses ban on Australian log exports.

    BUSINESS & TRADE Wood
After more than a year since China lifted its $1.6 billion ban on log exports, Australia's relations with the country are showing signs of improvement.

China is the top export destination for Australia, accounting for over 25% of the nation's total export trade.

Following the removal of the ban, Australia now exports more than 90,000 m³ of logs through China's extensive port system, indicating a notable recovery.

Cargo at Chinese ports includes over 66,000 m³ of sawlog and 25,600 m³ of pulp, demonstrating a swift increase compared to levels before 2024.

Despite progress, exports remain notably lower than pre-COVID levels, with China receiving 500,000 m³ of softwood in May 2019.

Additionally, woodchip exports are on the rise, with Australian exporters shipping over 229,300 m³ of wood chips through China in April 2024, reflecting a 12% increase from April 2023.
