Japanese environment ministry bans the use of PFHxS in textiles.

Sustainability Textile
The Japanese Ministry of the Environment has decided to ban the production and use of PFHxS (perfluorohexane sulfonic acid), a type of organic fluorine compound (PFAS) in textiles and garments.

PFHxS is used to make water-repellent textile products; imports of products using it will also be prohibited.

The Chemical Substances Control Law, which regulates chemical substances that are harmful to human health, will be revised to regulate PFHxS and the products used.

PFHxS is designated as a Class 1 Specified Chemical Substance, and its manufacture, import, and use will be prohibited from February 1, 2024.

From June 1, 2024, imports of fabrics clothing, and rugs that use water and oil-repellent treatments will be prohibited.

There is a growing movement around the world to tighten regulations regarding PFAS and the US as well as the EU, are moving toward regulating all of them.
