Pakistan’s cotton arrivals for the 2024-25 season have dramatically decreased, with total arrivals plummeting to 1.225 million bales—an alarming 59.69 percent drop compared to the previous year. This sharp decline is primarily attributed to reduced sowing areas, severe drought conditions, and increased pest attacks that have significantly impacted the cotton crop.
Despite a notable increase of 70.94 percent in total cotton production during the 2023-24 season compared to 2022-23, the current season has seen a reversal in fortunes. Farmers have reported extensive damage to crops due to unfavorable weather conditions, including prolonged droughts, which have stunted crop growth and reduced yields. Additionally, pest infestations have further exacerbated the situation, resulting in lower quality and quantity of cotton.
The reduction in cotton acreage has also contributed to the decline in arrivals, as many farmers opted to plant alternative crops that are perceived to be more profitable and resilient under current climatic conditions. This trend poses a significant challenge for Pakistan’s textile sector, which heavily relies on domestic cotton production to meet its raw material needs.
Industry experts stress the need for urgent interventions, such as improved irrigation systems, access to pest-resistant seeds, and financial support for farmers, to mitigate the ongoing challenges. Without these measures, the downturn in cotton production could have far-reaching implications for Pakistan’s textile industry and overall economic stability.
