In the first nine months of the current year, Cambodian exports of garments slipped 17.43 percent to US $5.92 billion as against $7.17 billion in the comparable months of the previous year.
Of overall apparel exports, overseas shipments of knitted apparels brought in $4.14 billion from January to September 2023, a drop of 18.9 percent, compared to $5.11 billion earned in first nine months of 2022.
“Woven clothing exports amounted to $1.78 billion in the period under review, down 13.6 percent to $2.06 billion for the similar period last year,” data of the Customs and Excise department informed. Experts predict that if this slide in exports continues, then more apparel manufacturing factories will close down leading to more job losses in the sector.
