China's plywood exports drop by 9% in H1 2023.

BUSINESS & TRADE Wood
During H1 2023, China's plywood exports amounted to 5.13 million m³, with a total value of $2.368 billion, a drop of 9% in volume, and a 20% drop in value compared to 2022.

Despite the diverse destinations for Chinese plywood exports, half of the plywood is shipped to 10 countries.

The Philippines and the UK have historically been major markets for Chinese plywood.

However, in H1 2023, plywood exports to these countries experienced significant declines, with a 7% decrease in shipments to the Philippines and an 18% drop to the UK, impacting the overall industry.

Due to ongoing trade tensions, the US is no longer the primary destination for Chinese plywood exports as exports to the U.S. amounted to 143,000 m³, valued at $103 million, reflecting a year-on-year decrease of 39% in volume and 51% in value.

Chinese plywood exports to the Middle East and Africa are on the rise, with notable increases in shipments to the UAE (11%) and Israel (15%) in the first half of the year.

Nigeria has emerged as China's third-largest plywood export market, with H1 2023 exports surging by 72% to 291,000 cubic meters, valued at $95 million, marking a 47% year-on-year increase.
